      A Life Rooted in Narbonne

Mathieu Barathier began his life in the French city of Narbonne, where he first learned the foundations of his craft under Jacques Gamelin. This early training provided the groundwork for a career that would eventually lead him to the heart of the Parisian art scene. In Paris, he sought further instruction from Jacques-Louis David, a period that brought him into close contact with the Neoclassical tradition. However, as his own sensibilities matured, Barath thier found himself moving away from the rigid structures of his teacher's style.

His heart eventually turned toward Romanticism. This shift was accompanied by a deep fascination with English art, a passion that led him to make frequent trips across the channel. He did not merely observe this foreign influence; he brought it home, amassing a significant collection of English engravings that reflected his personal tastes. These works, along with his own drawings and books, were eventually preserved for others in the Musée d'art et d'histoire de Narbonne.

The Spirit of Romanticism and Orientalism

As Barathier developed his own voice, he embraced themes that moved far beyond the classical ideals of his youth. His work often reflected a fascination with the exotic and the theatrical. He found inspiration in the epic poetry of Lord Byron, even creating sketches to accompany the poem Don Juan. This interest in storytelling and drama extended into his visual compositions, where he explored the worlds of ballet and theater through detailed illustrations.

Some of his most recognizable paintings belong to the Orientalist genre. In these works, such as Temple Dancer, Dancing Before an Oriental Prince and The Delights of the Harem, he captured scenes that spoke to the era's fascination with distant lands and cultures. His technical skill was not limited to the brush; he was also a capable engraver and lithographer, often producing colored engravings based on the works of other artists like Fragonard and Monvoisin.

      Later Years and Legacy

After spending several decades in the bustle of Paris, Barathier eventually sought a quieter existence. In the 1850s, he moved to Carcassonne before finally returning to his birthplace, Narbonne. In these later years, he remained active in the local community, serving as a member of the Commission Archéologique et Littéraire. His life in Narbonne was marked by a continued devotion to collecting, ranging from ancient weapons to ceramics and fine drawings.

When he passed away in Narbonne in 1867, he left behind more than just a body of work; he left a curated legacy of culture. His collections, which included a wide array of books, paintings, and historical artifacts, were bequeathed to the museum in his home city. Through these contributions, the personal interests and artistic transitions of Mathieu Barathier continue to be accessible to those studying the history of French art.
