A Life in Color and Shadow

The life of Peter Andersen Lillie was one of constant movement across the rugged landscapes of Norway. His career, which began around 1671, spanned four decades of steady work that took him from the valleys of Østerdalen to the northern reaches of Kvænangen in Troms. He was a man of many roles, often referred to as a kontrafeier, a craftsman who brought religious narratives to life within the quiet sanctity of local churches. His presence in the historical record is marked by his travels and his ability to secure commissions in diverse regions, including Møre og Romsdal and the mining community of Røros.

In the early years of his career, Lillie’s hand moved with a lighter touch. His works from this period avoided the heavy, dramatic contrasts that would later define his style, opting instead for a palette of softer colors. There is a sense of a man finding his footing, perhaps drawing on training from Sweden, as he moved through the churches of Vingelen and Øvre Rendal. His work was not merely a solitary pursuit; he operated a workshop, a necessity for a man tasked with the immense scale of decorating sacred spaces. His daughter, Karen, would eventually carry on this family tradition, working alongside an apprentice to maintain the legacy he had built.

      The Evolution of a Style

As the years passed, Lillie’s approach to the canvas underwent a profound transformation. He moved away from his early, lighter compositions and embraced the weight of the Baroque Trønder style. This shift brought a new intensity to his work, characterized by a saturated color scale and a deliberate play between light and shadow. He learned to use gold and silver as highlights, creating a sense of depth that drew the eye toward the spiritual subjects he painted. His technique often involved the careful copying of copper engravings and woodcuts, using standardized figure models to ensure his workshop could meet the demands of his many patrons.

His subject matter remained deeply rooted in the religious life of his community. He focused heavily on the Passion stories, bringing the suffering and humanity of Christ to the people through various depictions of the Last Supper and the Man of Sorrows. His repertoire included:

      • Portraiture of local figures, such as Sogneprest Henrik Lyster
      • Religious scenes including the Crucifixion and the Baptism of Jesus
      • Epitaphs, such as the one created for Maren Opdal in Elverum kirke
      • Evangelist portraits and various biblical narratives

      The Final Years in Trondheim

By 1686, Lillie had established himself as a citizen of Trondheim, where he owned three farms and maintained a significant presence in the local art scene. His life was one of practical industry as much as it was one of creative expression. He was part of a family of makers; his brother Gustav worked as a painter and kontrafeier, while his brother Markus was a sculptor. This environment of craftsmanship likely influenced the precision and structural quality of his religious panels and portraits.

The end of his life came unexpectedly in 1711. A private quarrel resulted in a hand injury, a physical wound that eventually led to fatal complications. He died in Trondheim, leaving behind a body of work that helped define the visual language of the Trøndelag region during a transformative era of Norwegian art history.
