      1900 - 1972

      Early Life, Family and Training

Richard Wiesner enters the historical record on 6 July 1900 in Ruda nad Moravou, Austria-Hungary. The Czech painter, who would later become a teacher, curator, and graphic artist, began his formal artistic development in Prague. Between 1922 and 1928, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts, refining his technique under the instruction of Vratislava Nechleby and Jakub Obrovský.

The trajectory of his training shifted when he moved toward Paris. In the French capital, he studied under František Kupka, a period that expanded his technical perspective beyond his initial academic foundations. This international exposure helped shape the visual language he would carry back to Czechoslovakia. His lineage continued through his son, the choreographer Daniel Wiesner.

      Artistic Style and Professional Career

The French influence arrives early. During his time in France, the works of Manet leave a distinct mark on his aesthetic approach. This period of study shapes his early sensibilities before a significant shift occurs. As his career progresses, he moves away from these earlier influences to adopt the principles of socialist realism. His output remains diverse, spanning figurative compositions, portraits, still lifes, and landscapes.

Professional recognition follows a steady trajectory within the Czech art establishment. He joins the Mánes Union of Fine Arts in 1930. Later, his standing within the institutional framework grows; he becomes a member of the Union of Czechoslovak Fine Artists from 1950 to 1972, and subsequently joins the Union of Czech Fine Artists in 1972. His contributions to the field earn him significant state honors. In 1960, he is named a Merited Artist of Czechoslovakia. This is followed by the highest distinction, the title of Národní umělec, in 1971.

      Major Commissions and Works

Wiesner’s practice extends beyond the easel into the realm of architectural decoration. He leaves a permanent mark on the urban fabric through large-scale interventions. His hand is visible in the ceiling of the Karolín vestibule and within the Praha-Smíchov station, where he provided decorations for the space. These works integrate his vision into the functional architecture of the city.

The studio remains a recurring site of focus. In View from the Studio, the artist captures a specific perspective of his workspace. His output also includes intimate studies and still lifes. In 1965, he produced Still Life with Wine Glass and Fruits. This work shifts the scale from public architecture to the quiet arrangement of objects. Even in more delicate mediums, the precision remains. He executed NOČNÍ ROZHOVOR using pencil on paper, a stark departure from the expansive surfaces of his architectural commissions.
