The Quiet Observer of Bamberg and Munich
Theodor Mattenheimer was born in 1787 in Bamberg, the son of a portraitist and historical painter named Andreas Theodor Mattenheimer the Elder. His early years were spent watching his father work, absorbing the mechanics of light and form through a family trade. By 1807, his talent had caught the eye of Duchess Maria Anna in Bayern, who recommended him to King Max I Joseph of Bavaria. This connection led to a specific arrangement: the King provided an annual aid of 300 Gulden, but with a condition that the young artist focus his brush on the delicate subjects of fruit and flowers.
He moved to Munich to study at the Academy, learning under Johann Peter von Langer. Much of his technical understanding came from the quiet hours spent in the Munich Gallery, where he sat before the works of Jan van Huysum and Abraham Mignon, copying the Old Masters to understand how they rendered the skin of a peach or the petal of a flower. His life was not solely confined to the studio; in 1812, he participated in the Napoleonic campaign in Russia, a period of upheaval that stood in stark contrast to the stillness of his later subjects.
A Life of Service and Stillness
Mattenheimer’s career was marked by a steady progression through the administrative and educational structures of the Bavarian art world. He moved between roles that required a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of how art should be preserved and taught.
- Gallery inspector in Bamberg in 1817
- Gallery inspector in Augsburg from 1823
- Director of Art and Drawing School in Augsburg in 1825
- Inspector of the Munich Royal Gallery in 1829
While his administrative duties kept him busy, his hand remained focused on the small, the perishable, and the personal. He was a popular portraitist, capturing the likenesses of those in his circle, including his friend Johann Georg von Dillis. His paintings often carry the weight of a specific moment, whether it is a bowl of fruit or a seated figure, rendered with a focus on the physical reality of the object.
The Legacy of the Painted Object
His work remains in several significant collections, including the Bavarian National Museum and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, as well as the Museum of Regensburg. These pieces show a man who found depth in the mundane. A still life from 1831, for instance, depicts peaches and plums, capturing the textures of the fruit on canvas. He died in Munich in 1856, leaving behind a body of work that reflects the disciplined study of nature and the quiet dignity of the still life.
