The Multifaceted Life of Théodore Hannon
Théodore Hannon was a Belgian painter, watercolorist, engraver, and man of letters. Born in Ixelles, Belgium, he initially pursued studies in the sciences and medicine at the Free University of Brussels before pivoting toward the fine arts. He trained at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles under Camille van Camp and became a member of the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts. As an artist, he was a founding member of the anti-conformist group La Chrysalide and joined the International Society of Watercolorists. His artistic circle included figures such as James Ensor and Félicien Rops, with whom he maintained a long-standing friendship and correspondence.
Literary and Artistic Pursuits
Beyond his visual work, Hannon was a prolific poet and writer. He published several collections of poetry, including Les vingt-quatre coups de sonnet and Rimes de joie. His literary output also encompassed works such as Au pays de Manneken-Pis, various boulevard plays, and ballet pantomimes like Pierrot macabre. His writing often intersected with his visual art, as seen in his editorial work for the magazine The Artist. His literary reputation was noted by Joris-Karl Huysmans, who included praise for Hannon's poetry in the novel À rebours.
