      A Life of Many Disciplines

Václav Šrůtek was a man of diverse talents, a figure whose creative energy flowed through architecture, music, and painting. Born in Náchod, Czech Republic, he grew up in a family deeply rooted in the local community, where his parents owned a tavern. His early years were shaped by a restless curiosity that led him from the schools of Vienna and Broumov to the technical and musical halls of Prague. He was a student of several notable teachers, absorbing the nuances of both structure and melody.

The turbulence of the first world war interrupted his studies, pulling him away to the front lines in Halič and Bolzano. When the war ended and a new nation emerged, he returned to his studies, completing his technical education and refining his artistic eye under the guidance of Alois Kalvoda. This period of transition helped define the multifaceted nature of his character, as he moved between the precision of an architect and the sensitivity of a composer.

The Search for Light and Landscape

His work often sought to capture the essence of specific places, ranging from the Mediterranean coasts to the quiet outskirts of Prague. He had a particular affinity for the landscapes surrounding the Berounka river and the urban peripheries that were changing as the decades passed. His sketches and paintings often functioned as a visual diary, recording the world as he moved through it.

      His artistic interests included:

      • The architectural details of Mediterranean destinations.
      • The quiet, everyday scenes of the Prague periphery.
      • The natural landscapes of the Berounka river region.
      • The urban views of the first republic era.

In 1922, he moved to Slovakia, where he worked as a technician on various construction projects, including schools and technical buildings. This period allowed him to blend his architectural knowledge with his visual art, as he remained active in both the technical and creative spheres. He became a member of the Slovak Art Association, exhibiting his work in various locations, including New York.

      A Legacy of Observation

The later years of his life saw a return to Prague, where he lived and worked in an atelier. While the hardships of the second world war caused a temporary pause in his painting, he returned to his brushes afterward, focusing heavily on the landscapes of the Berounka and the edges of the city. His output was not limited to oil on cardboard or canvas; his many drawings and sketches provide a deep look into how he perceived his surroundings.

He passed away in Čerčany, leaving behind a family of artists, including his son, Václav Alois Šrůtek. His life was a continuous attempt to bridge the gap between the structural world of the architect and the lyrical world of the musician and painter.
