      1820 - 1889

      Early Life, Family and Training

William Sawyer was born on November 9, 1820, in Montreal, Lower Canada. He was the son of John Sawyer and Agnes Brown, growing up in a landscape that would eventually shape his artistic eye. Before committing himself to the brush, he spent time considering a career in law, a path that offered a level of stability that the life of an artist in 19th-century Canada often lacked. Despite the uncertainty of such a profession, he chose to follow his interest in the visual arts.

His early training took place in Montreal, where he began to develop his technical skills. His first works were not limited to a single subject; instead, he experimented with genre scenes, landscapes, and portraits. These early efforts showed a young man finding his way through different ways of seeing the world around him. By the time he established himself, his hand was practiced in capturing both the quiet moments of daily life and the formal likenesses of his subjects.

Career as an Itinerant Portrait Painter

By the mid 1840s, Sawyer had established a studio in Montreal, but the local market offered limited opportunities for a young artist seeking steady work. To find his subjects, he became an itinerant painter, traveling extensively along the north shore of Lake Ontario. He moved between growing frontier towns, seeking out the businessmen and lawyers who were settling the region. His travels took him through Toronto, Morrisburg, Brockville, Kingston, Belleville, Bowmanville, and Port Hope, as he followed the needs of a developing society.

His technical skills continued to evolve through direct study and travel. In 1851, he made a trip to New York to further his education. Later, in 1862, he traveled abroad to Scotland, England, France, and Belgium. During these trips, he visited galleries to study the works of the most prominent portrait painters of the era, bringing those observations back to his practice in Canada.

      Patrons, Workshop and Commissions

As his reputation grew, Sawyer found himself entrusted with the likenesses of influential figures. His brush captured the faces of several senators, including Frank Smith and Robert Duncan Wilmot. His reach extended into the halls of government, where he was commissioned to paint three speakers of the Senate for the Library of Parliament. These high-profile assignments placed his work in the center of Canadian political life, alongside portraits of notable men such as Sir William Edmond Logan, William Molson, Charles Tupper, and William Workman.

Life as an artist required a practical approach to steady work. To supplement his income, Sawyer offered art lessons and took photographs, a medium he embraced alongside his painting. In Montreal, he operated an "Art and Photographic Studio" in partnership with Edwin R. Turner. This studio allowed him to bridge the gap between traditional portraiture and the emerging technology of photography, sometimes using photographs as sketches to assist in his painting process.

Where to See the Works Today

The legacy of William Sawyer remains visible through various collections across Canada, preserved in institutions that hold his portraiture and earlier studies. His paintings can be found in the National Gallery of Canada, where his likenesses are kept alongside other significant works of the era. In Montreal, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts maintains pieces from his career, reflecting his deep connection to the city where he established his studio and practiced both painting and photography.

Travelers seeking his work might also visit the Art Gallery of Hamilton or the Winnipeg Art Gallery, both of which hold his portraits in their permanent collections. His presence in the Canadian art landscape is further felt in Ontario, specifically at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre at Queen’s University. These various locations offer a way to encounter the faces and subjects he captured during his years as an itinerant painter and studio operator.
