Ernst Oppler, born in Hanover in 1867, was the son of Edwin Oppler (1831–1880), a prominent German-Jewish architect. Alongside his brother Alexander Oppler (sculptor), Berthold Oppler (physician), and Siegmund Oppler (attorney), Ernst received a privileged education at the Academy of Arts in Munich under Nikolaus Gysis and Ludwig von Löfftz—influences that would indelibly mark his artistic vision. His early works demonstrated a naturalistic approach, reflecting the meticulous observation characteristic of academic training. However, Ernst swiftly embraced Impressionism’s revolutionary spirit, captivated by James Abbott McNeill Whistler's groundbreaking techniques.
