The Life and Artistic Evolution of Hugó Scheiber

Born in Budapest, Hugó Scheiber was a Jewish-Hungarian modernist painter who began his journey in Vienna at the age of eight. After returning to Budapest, he balanced working to support his family with attending painting classes at the School of Design. Following the completion of his studies in 1900, his early work embraced a post-Impressionistic style. However, from 1910 onward, his aesthetic shifted toward German Expressionism and Futurism. This evolution led to a friendship with the Italian avant-gardist Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, who invited him to join the Futurist Movement. While his style remained closer to German Expressionism than Futurism, he eventually moved toward an international art deco manner.

Scheiber's career reached a significant turning point when Herwarth Walden, founder of the Sturm Gallery in Berlin, became interested in his work. This connection led Scheiber to move to Berlin in 1922, where his paintings appeared in Walden's magazine. His reputation grew through exhibitions in London, Rome, La Paz, and New York. In 1926, he was represented in a New York exhibition organized by Katherine Dreier. Following the rise of Nazism, he returned to Hungary in 1934. He remained a well-regarded figure, even receiving a posthumous honor when one of his images was used for a Soviet postage stamp.

      Style and Subject Matter

Scheiber was a highly prolific artist, producing well over 1500 works, primarily utilizing gouache and oil. His paintings are characterized by a special flair for depicting cosmopolitan modern life through stylized shapes and expressive colors. He frequently focused on specific themes, including:

      • Café and cabaret life
      • Street scenes
      • Jazz musicians
      • Flappers
      • Self-portraits, often depicted with a cigar

His technique often employed sturdily abstracted forms and spontaneous brush strokes to capture the energy of his subjects. His work is held in various permanent museum collections, including the Hungarian National Museum, the Jannus Pannonius Museum, and the Yale University Art Gallery.
