A Life of Artistic Resilience
Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Léo Maillet, also known as Leopold Mayer or Théophile Maillet, was a painter, photographer, and draftsperson. His early training began with the watercolorist Fay in Vienna, followed by studies at the Städelschule in Frankfurt in the graphics class of Professor Franz Karl Delavilla. A significant turning point in his career occurred in 1930 when Max Beckmann accepted him into his masterclass. His artistic output was profoundly impacted by the political upheavals of the era; his studio in Paris was raided by the Gestapo in 1943, resulting in the destruction of much of his work created since 1926.
