A Tapestry of Diaspora and Resilience

The life and artistry of Pepe Coronado are inextricably woven into the turbulent threads of history, migration, and the search for identity. Born in 1965 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Coronado’s early years were shadowed by the profound political instability of his homeland, including the echoes of the Dominican Civil War. This formative exposure to a landscape of social upheaval instilled in him a lifelong commitment to using art as a vessel for truth and a tool for justice. When economic hardship and the weight of the Balaguer regime prompted his immigration to the United States in 1989, Coronado did not merely leave a country behind; he carried with him a rich, complex cultural reservoir that would become the heartbeat of his creative practice.

His journey through the American landscape—from the vibrant energy of Austin, Texas, to the academic rigor of Washington, D.C., and eventually the sprawling urbanity of New York City—served as a crucible for his artistic evolution. It was in these diverse environments that Coronado began to bridge the gap between his Dominican roots and the burgeoning Chicano graphic movement. By immersing himself in the traditions of printmaking, he found a medium capable of echoing the struggles of the marginalized, allowing him to translate the visceral experiences of displacement and diaspora into a visual language that resonates far beyond borders.

The Alchemy of Print and Symbolism

Coronado’s technical mastery is most profoundly expressed through the medium of printmaking, where he employs a meticulous approach to linework and color. His work often functions as a dreamlike intersection of reality and myth, populated by fantastical creatures and intricate symbolic representations that draw heavily from indigenous folklore and Dominican mythology. There is a rhythmic energy in his canvases, achieved through bold palettes and a precision that demands close contemplation. He does not merely depict scenes; he constructs allegories that explore the enduring power of cultural heritage and the resilience required to maintain one's identity in the face of assimilation.

The artist’s fascination with the political landscape is perhaps most strikingly captured in his explorations of national boundaries and relationships. In works such as U.S./D.R. In Relationship, he turns a critical lens toward the complicated web of political and cultural exchange between the United States and the Dominican Republic, referencing historical occupations and the legacies of regimes like that of Rafael Trujillo. His ability to blend the surreal with the socio-political creates a tension that is both unsettling and deeply moving, inviting viewers to confront the uncomfortable truths of history through a lens of profound beauty.

Legacy of Collaboration and Activism

Beyond his individual canvases and prints, Pepe Coronado has established himself as a vital pillar of the artistic community through his dedication to collaborative practice. As the founder of Dominican York Proyecto GRAFICA and Coronado Print Studio, he has worked tirelessly to foster spaces where Dominican American artists can converge, share techniques, and amplify their collective voices. This commitment to mentorship and community building mirrors the spirit of the Mexican muralists who inspired him, such as Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, whose dedication to social realism provided a blueprint for art as an instrument of revolutionary thought.

His recognition by prestigious institutions, including his participation in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Pandemic Oral History Program, underscores his significance within the broader canon of American art. Coronado’s work remains a forceful assertion of cultural pride, a dialogue with history that refuses to be silenced, and a testament to the transformative power of the immigrant experience. Through his hands, the fragmented maps of identity are reassembled into a cohesive, vibrant narrative of survival and strength.
