Raised primarily by his father, a skilled sailboat builder in Jacmel, Duffaut’s early life was steeped in the maritime rhythms and coastal textures that would later define his visual vocabulary. His journey into the world of fine art began in 1944 when he encountered Rigaud Benoit, a talent scout for the newly established Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince. This pivotal meeting set the stage for a career that would see him move from precise depictions of his hometown to the creation of entirely fantastical realms.
Duffaut’s artistic evolution is a journey from the tangible to the transcendent. While his early works were characterized by highly precise renderings of local life, he eventually transitioned into a style that was both sophisticated and deeply imaginative. Often described as a naïve painter, Duffaut moved beyond mere representation to craft what are known as villes imaginaires—imaginary cities.
