A Life Shaped by Shadows and Light
Born into a humble family in Barcelona in 1826, Ramón Martí i Alsina faced the sudden loss of his parents at the age of eight. Raised by a godfather who harbored deep reservations about an artistic vocation, the young orphan found himself steered toward the study of philosophy and literature. He eventually earned a bachelor's degree in the subject, yet the pull of the canvas remained. During the night, he attended classes at the Escola de la Llotja, quietly building the foundation for a career that would later challenge the established academic order.
His early professional steps were taken in Mataró, his mother's hometown, where he began to find a modest footing among the local bourgeoisie as a portrait painter. These formative years were spent observing the natural world, finding inspiration along the coast of Maresme and within the mountain ranges. In 1848, a move to Paris introduced him to the works of Horace Vernet and Eugène Delacroix, while later encounters with Gustave Courbet and the Barbizon School provided a more definitive direction for his developing eye.
The Pursuit of Natural Truth
Martí i Alsina became a central figure in Spanish Realism by championing the direct study of nature. As a professor at La Llotja, he introduced his students to the practice of en plein air painting, encouraging them to move away from rigid, outdated academic methods. His daily routine was a disciplined cycle: sketching landscapes in the early morning, working in his studio during the afternoon, and teaching in the evening. This commitment to observation allowed him to capture the atmosphere of Catalan summers through a careful application of light and color.
His technical approach often mirrored the principles of the Macchiaioli movement, utilizing spontaneous brushwork and a deliberate use of blues and greens to convey movement. While his large-scale history paintings, such as those depicting the sieges of Girona, showed the influence of Delacroix and Géricault, his landscapes and seascapes possessed a more grounded, naturalistic quality. He sought no easy solutions for depicting volume or light, relying instead on an analytical contemplation of the objects and environments surrounding him.
Hardship and the Weight of History
The later years of his life were marked by profound personal loss and economic instability. The deaths of his son and daughter in 1872, followed by the death of his wife in 1878, cast a heavy shadow over his creative output. These tragedies coincided with mounting debts that forced him to expand his production significantly. To manage the financial strain, he operated as many as seven separate workshops, employing others to assist with much of the labor, while he provided the final, essential touches to the works.
Despite these pressures, his dedication to certain historical themes remained steadfast. He spent much of his remaining energy on a massive cycle of paintings regarding the Peninsular War, including the monumental The Great Day of Girona. Though financial constraints and personal grief often limited his ability to complete such ambitious projects, he continued to paint with a stubborn determination, even as illness began to take hold. He passed away in Barcelona in 1894, leaving behind a body of work that helped initiate the modern Catalan school of painting.
