The Life and Career of Alexander Sanders
Born in Emden, Germany, in 1624, Alexander Sanders spent his life within the same coastal community where he first began his craft. He was a German painter who dedicated his years to the art of capturing the likeness of others. His presence in the local art scene was marked by a steady and productive output, establishing him as a prolific portrait painter during the seventeenth century.
Sanders focused much of his energy on the faces and figures of his contemporaries. His work was shaped by the visual language of the Haarlem school, a style that influenced how he approached his subjects. This connection to broader artistic traditions allowed him to bring a sense of familiarity and structure to the many individuals who sat for his brush.
The life of Alexander Sanders came to an end in Emden in 1684. He remained tied to this German city from his birth until his death, leaving behind a body of work that reflects the people of his era. Through his portraits, the likenesses of those from his time continue to be preserved.
Notable Portrait Commissions and Works
Sanders found his footing as a prolific portrait painter, a vocation that required him to capture the likenesses of the people who shaped his era. His approach to these subjects shows the clear influence of the Haarlem school, which shaped his way of seeing and rendering the human form. This connection to Dutch artistic traditions allowed him to navigate the social circles of his time, translating the presence of his sitters onto canvas with a steady hand.
One of his earlier known engagements involved the nobility, seen in his portrait of Countess Sophie Katharine von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg, painted about 1650. This work reflects the dignity expected of such a commission. Later in his career, his brush met the Dutch subject Anna Maria Dorothea van der Borch. His portrait of her, dated 1669, remains a significant part of his recorded output, capturing a specific moment in the life of a woman from the Netherlands.
Works Held in Museums and Collections
Many of the pieces Alexander Sanders left behind remain in the care of institutions that preserve the history of Emden. His involvement in the civic life of the city is visible through several group portraits. In 1659, he painted the Regents of the elmhouse in Emden, and during that same year, he captured the Regents of the orphanage and infirmary. These works reflect the social structures of his time. Around 1660, he also completed a group portrait of the lady governors of the Emden hospice, a piece currently held in the Ostfriesisches Landesmuseum in Emden.
Beyond these communal records, individual faces from his career have found their way into private and public collections. The Museum im Roselius-Haus in Bremen holds a portrait of an unknown man, painted about 1670. This work, along with others from his later years, helps us understand the people who lived in the region during the seventeenth century.
