      Early Life, Family and Training

Glenn M. Shaw enters the world on February 6, 1891, in Olmsted Falls, Ohio. He is born to Arthur B. and Grace Moore. The landscape of his youth is shaped by the industrial and social rhythms of Ohio, a setting that would later inform his visual language. He completes his early schooling at West High School, establishing a foundation in the region before moving toward formal artistic study.

The trajectory of his life shifts toward the Cleveland School of Art, also known as the Cleveland Institute of Art. Here, the technical rigors of the studio begin to take hold. It is within these institutional walls that his personal and professional lives intersect. In 1917, he marries Elsa Vick Shaw, a schoolmate who shared his path through both West High School and the Cleveland School of Art. This partnership marks the beginning of a lifelong connection rooted in their shared academic origins.

      Career in Cleveland and Teaching

The Cleveland Institute of Art becomes the center of Shaw's professional life for over three decades. From 1922 to 1957, he maintains a constant presence within its halls. His influence grows steadily until the final twenty years of his tenure, when he takes charge as the head of the mural painting section. The atmosphere shifts during the Second World War; the art school pivots toward the war effort, and Shaw adapts his instruction to teach camouflage classes.

His influence extends far beyond the classroom into the administrative heart of the regional art scene. He moves through various leadership roles, steering the direction of local creative organizations. He serves as the first president of the Lakewood Art Club and holds the presidency of the Cleveland Society of Artists. His reach continues through his leadership of the Cleveland Fine Arts Advisory Committee and the Ohio Water Color Society.

      Major Murals and Commissions

The scale of Shaw’s reputation rests heavily on his work as a muralist. He produced over 60 murals, moving between public institutions and grand commercial spaces. His first major commission takes shape in an Italian market scene for the United Bank Building, located across from the West Side Market on W. 25th St. From there, his reach extends to the Federal Reserve Bank in Pittsburgh and the Lakewood High School auditorium. He even brings his art to the sea, having painted murals for the liner S.S. America.

The 1930s bring a shift toward federal patronage. Under the Treasury Relief Act, Shaw receives a commission in 1937 to paint the murals for the Canton, Ohio, post office. These specific works focus on the steel making industry, providing descriptive and precise depictions of the workers and the industrial landscape of Canton. His large-scale compositions also appear in the Chicago Century of Progress exhibition and as a fresco within the Cleveland Greyhound bus station.

      Later Years and Death

The landscape shifts in 1968. Moving away from the established art circles of Ohio, Glenn M. Shaw and his wife, Elsa Vick Shaw, relocate to Arizona. The transition marks a departure from the decades of teaching and large-scale mural commissions that defined his professional life in the Midwest.

In his final years, the focus turns from the canvas to the written word. Residing in Sun City, he becomes a frequent contributor to local discourse, writing letters to the editor. This period of engagement with community issues marks his final chapter before his death on August 22, 1981. He left no survivors.
