      The Antwerp Studio

Anvers, 1789. The air in the city carries the weight of a changing era as Hendrik Josef Franciscus Van der Poorten enters the world. He is the son of Antoine Van der Poorten, a merchant, and Anne Marie Kets. His early years are rooted in this Belgian landscape, a foundation that later informs his focus on the natural world. The path toward the easel begins at the Académie royale des beaux-arts d'Anvers, where he sits under the guidance of Guillaume Herreyns. He moves from the classroom to the direct observation of nature, studying under the landscape specialist Hendrik Aarnout Myin.

The studio becomes a place of instruction and quiet industry. By the 1820s, his workshop is a frequent destination for those seeking to master the depiction of animals. He does not merely paint; he teaches. His influence spreads through a lineage of students including:

      Lines and Light

The transition from brush to needle marks a significant shift in his output. While his oil paintings capture the quietude of Belgian scenery, his work with etching, aquatint, and lithography allows for a different kind of precision. Between 1840 and 1861, the sharp bite of acid on metal plates becomes a primary medium. He captures the textures of the earth and the anatomy of livestock through the rigorous techniques of drypoint and eau-forte.

His landscapes are not mere scenery; they are studies of specific locales. He draws from his travels through Germany and France, bringing back varied perspectives to his Antwerp base. His compositions often feature:

      • The banks of the Meuse river
      • The sandy terrains of Mol en Campine
      • The wooded areas near Verviers
      • Animal subjects such as horses, oxen, and sheep

In works like Three Figures on a Road with Houses and Trees to Right, the focus remains on the interaction between figures and their environment. The style stays close to that of Balthasar Ommeganck, favoring a grounded, observational approach over dramatic artifice.

      Recognition and Legacy

Success arrives through the competitive circuit of regional salons. In 1814, Ghent rewards him with a gold medal for landscape painting. By 1816, he secures the landscape prize in Antwerp, winning by unanimous vote. He maintains a regular presence at the triennial salons of Anvers, Gand, and Bruxelles until 1829. His works find their way into permanent collections that preserve his vision of the nineteenth-century landscape, including the Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Gand, and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.

The end comes in Antwerp in 1874. He dies at his home on Kleine Gasthuisstraat, leaving behind a body of work that spans both the fluid strokes of oil on panel and the precise, etched lines of printmaking. His life concludes where it began, in the same city that shaped his early training.
