A Life in Lines and Layers

Jacob van der Pol, known to many as Jaap, lived a life defined by the act of seeing. Born in Landsmeer, he eventually found his home and his creative rhythm in Edam. He was a man of many disciplines, moving between the roles of collage artist, photographer, painter, and illustrator. His education began at the Teken Normaalschool, an institution that would later become the Rietveld Academy, where he honed the technical skills that would support a long and varied career.

His work often drifted toward the edges of traditional boundaries. He was a storyteller through many mediums, sometimes using the structured panels of a comic to voice his observations. Whether he was working on a series like Het Schoolarchief or collaborating on stories like Bor Klavir, there was a sense of a man deeply engaged with the visual language of his time. He even adopted the pen name Larry Oblomov, a nod to a different side of his creative identity.

      Thematic Echoes and Recognition

In his private art, away from the demands of illustration or comics, certain figures appeared with regularity. Sailors became a recurring theme in his work, perhaps reflecting a sense of movement or the solitude of the sea. This period of his life was marked by significant professional validation when he received Royal grants for the art of painting in 1964 and 1965. These years saw him producing works that would eventually find their way into permanent collections, such as the Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo.

His output was diverse, spanning several decades and various formats:

      • Collage and painting
      • Photography
      • Comic book illustration
      • Artistic e-mails and digital reflections

      A Final Connection

Even in his final years, Jaap van der Pol remained connected to the act of sharing his vision. Starting in 2004, he began a practice of sending weekly "art spam" to his subscribers. These were not mere messages, but digital windows containing photos of his art, performances, or personal reflections. It was a way of maintaining a dialogue with those who followed his work, a habit he maintained until his death in 2009. His final communication was a poignant gesture, sent from his death bed, featuring a drawing from his grandson.
