      A presence in Catalonia

Joan Gascó moved from Navarra to find his place in the workshops of Catalonia around 1500. His life followed the quiet rhythms of the early sixteenth century, eventually finding its end in Vic in 1529. He worked during a time when the late Gothic traditions of the region were meeting new influences from the north.

The traces of his hand are found in wood and pigment. In pieces like Santa Barbara, created in 1516, he used oil and tempera to build form upon wooden panels. His work shows a specific way of looking at the world, one that absorbed the Flemish style while remaining rooted in the local Catalan tradition.

      The weight of the image

There is a particular intensity in how Gascó handled the human face. In his Holy Face, painted around 1513, the focus rests on the eyes of Christ. He used a radial design in the halo to pull the viewer toward that central gaze. The paint captures the physical reality of the crown of thorns and the blood on the skin.

His technique relied on the careful layering of materials:

      • Tempera for precise, initial details.
      • Oils to add depth and weight to the flesh.
      • Wood as the steady foundation for his compositions.

      A rediscovered legacy

For a long time, some of his works were seen through the lens of other painters. The Holy Face was once thought to belong to the German school or even to Bartolomé Bermejo. It was not until 1944 that the connection to Gascó was firmly established, noted by the similarities between this panel and his work on the prophet David in Granollers.

Some of his pieces have survived through unexpected means. The Holy Face was found in 1868 by Canon Jaume Collell, tucked behind a towel in an old lavabo within the canons' sacristy at Vic Cathedral. Today, his traces remain in collections such as the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya and the Museu Episcopal de Vic.
