Early Life and Family Background
John Miers was born in Leeds, United Kingdom, in 1756. Some records suggest he arrived in Quarry Hill on 22 December 1758. His father, also named John Miers, worked as a painter of heraldic signs on coaches. This was a trade of precision and color, involving the decoration of transport with specific symbols. His mother was Sarah. Growing up in this environment, the young John Miers spent his time assisting his father with the family's work. He learned the practicalities of the craft through observation and hands-on labor.
There is no evidence that he ever received any formal or professional artistic training. His skills were built from the ground up, shaped by the tools and materials of a coach painter's workshop. He learned how to mix and pack artist's paint, a skill passed down through the family's manual trades. His early years were defined by these practical tasks rather than the study of fine art in a classroom. He was a child of the artisan class, learning the weight of a brush and the texture of pigment through the daily rhythms of his father's business.
Career in Leeds and Edinburgh
In 1781, Miers began working as a painter of profile portraits, known as silhouettes. He set up his own independent business in Leeds, operating as a painter, gilder, and profilist. His studio was located in the Lower-head Row, where he offered his services to the local community. He had previously assisted his father in his work, learning the trade within the family business.
His work eventually took him away from Leeds. He moved to Edinburgh and spent time operating in various Northern towns. During these years, he established the reputation for accuracy that would define his practice. He moved through these northern locations before eventually settling in London.
Success in London and Technique
By about 1788, the studio had moved to The Strand in London. It was a place of constant, quick movement. Customers came for sittings that lasted only three minutes, a pace that allowed for a massive volume of work. By the time he died in 1821, the studio had produced an estimated 100,000 profiles.
The method relied on a specific kind of precision. Miers often worked with unrelieved black paint on plaster, a technique that gave the profiles a sharp, heavy presence. For other miniatures, he used ivory or plaster as a base. He applied delicate shading to the edges of the work, capturing the fine details of a sitter's hair and the folds of their clothes. The face itself remained a stark, black silhouette, stripped of color but full of shape.
Notable Patrons and Connections
Miers moved in circles that included the poet Robert Burns. The connection was close enough that Burns once wrote a letter suggesting his friend Robert Ainslee sit for a profile painting by the artist. Burns wanted the likenesses of himself, Lord Glencairn, and the doctor to hang together in a trio over a new chimney-piece. In 1787, Burns sat for his own profile, leaving behind a likeness captured in that quick, dark method.
The artist's reach extended to the family of his notable acquaintances. He painted a silhouette of Agnes Broun, the mother of Robert Burns. These sittings were brief, often lasting only a few minutes, yet they left behind a permanent record of the sitter's features in black against a pale surface.
