Born in Milwaukee, United States, John Wilde was a painter, draughtsman, and printmaker who spent much of his life in Wisconsin. He was a dedicated educator, teaching at The University of Wisconsin–Madison for over 35 years and later serving at the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters and the National Academy of Design in New York City. His artistic journey began with an instinctive love of drawing, a passion he developed while studying informally with Paul Lewis Clemens and later at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. During his military service in the US Army, he produced drawings for the army venereal disease program and created map terrain models for intelligence.
Wilde's visual language often merged the human form with the natural world, frequently featuring birds, plants, and flowers. His compositions often explored themes of growth, decay, and mortality, utilizing motifs such as memento mori. He was known for his technical precision, particularly in the use of silverpoint, a medium he adopted through the influence of James Watrous. His work frequently incorporated self-portraiture, placing himself within fantastical or dream-like landscapes to confront personal fears and desires.
The artist's oeuvre is characterized by a deep interest in the cycles of nature and the complexities of the human body. His paintings often featured nude or semi-nude female figures in close association with botanical elements. In his later years, Wilde expanded his practice into printmaking, collaborating with various artists and publishers to experiment with etchings, lithographs, and vitreographs. His work is held in numerous prestigious institutions, including:
