The Life and Art of John Wilde
Born in Milwaukee, United States, John Wilde was a painter, draughtsman, and printmaker who spent much of his life in Wisconsin. He was a dedicated educator, teaching at The University of Wisconsin–Madison for over 35 years and later serving at the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters and the National Academy of Design in New York City. His artistic journey began with an instinctive love of drawing, a passion he developed while studying informally with Paul Lewis Clemens and later at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His compositions often explored themes of growth, decay, and mortality, utilizing motifs such as memento mori. He was known for his technical precision, particularly in the use of silverpoint, a medium he adopted through the influence of James Watrous. His work frequently incorporated self-portraiture, placing himself within fantastical or dream-like landscapes to confront personal fears and desires.
