      Early Life and Artistic Training

Antwerp, 1895. Jozef Peeters enters a world that will soon demand a new visual language. Born in Belgium, he develops the foundational skills of a painter, engraver, and graphic artist. The city of his birth provides the backdrop for his early explorations into form and line.

By 1913, Peeters finds himself within the walls of the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts. His time there is brief. He does not linger in the traditionalist structures of the academy for long. Instead, he turns inward toward his own experiments. He seeks something beyond the established curriculum, prioritizing personal investigation over formal instruction. This early period is defined by a restless search for a unique aesthetic, a drive that pushes him away from academic norms and toward the radical shifts that define his later career.

      Evolution of Style and Movements

The year 1914 marks a shift toward the external world. Peeters moves away from his early experiments to focus on luminist landscapes and portraits. The light of the luminist style defines his early output, capturing the immediate visual reality of his surroundings. This phase is brief. By 1915, the focus shifts inward. He turns toward symbolistic works, drawing heavy inspiration from theosophy. These compositions seek a spiritual dimension beyond the physical landscape.

A sudden collision with the avant-garde changes everything in 1918. A meeting with Filippo Tommaso Marinetti pulls Peeters into the orbit of the futurist movement. The energy of futurism disrupts his previous inclinations. He moves toward the radical. By 1920, he presents his first abstract painting, breaking entirely from representational forms. Alongside Karel Maes, he emerges as one of the first Belgian abstract painters, stripping art down to its essential, non-objective components.

      Artistic Groups and Publications

September 1918 marks a shift in the Belgian avant-garde. Jozef Peeters joins Edmond Van Dooren and Jan Cockx to establish the "Modern Art" group. This collective does not remain local for long. They forge international connections, reaching out to the "Der Sturm" Gallery in Germany to bridge the gap between Antwerp and the broader European scene. The group organizes three art congresses, using exhibitions to push the boundaries of contemporary expression.

The momentum of the movement carries into the next decade through the printed word. In 1921, Peeters moves into the realm of publishing in Antwerp. Alongside Geert Pijnenburg and Michel Seuphor, he releases Het Overzicht (The Panorama). This publication acts as a vital conduit for new ideas. By April 1925, the focus shifts toward a more structured aesthetic. Peeters creates De Driehoek (The Triangle) magazine, a dedicated platform designed to support and promote constructivist art.

      Interior Design and Commissions

The boundary between fine art and domestic life dissolves within the walls of Peeters' corner apartment on the quai de Gerlache in Antwerp. By 1924, the artist has transformed his living space into a total work of art, treating the architecture as a canvas for modernism. He applies color and atmosphere to every room, using asymmetric compositions to define the character of each space without descending into chaos. This immersive approach extends to the very objects used in daily life; he designs the furniture and the chandeliers that inhabit the rooms, ensuring the interior functions as a cohesive, three-dimensional manifestation of his aesthetic principles.

His design work often intersects with the personal and the practical. He applies his creative vision to functional objects, including the design of a wheelchair for his wife. This intersection of art and utility is a recurring theme in his domestic environment. The apartment-atelier remains a physical record of these efforts, where the walls and ceilings are invested with his specific color combinations, creating a space where architecture and plastic arts are inseparable.

      Later Years and Death

The creative output of Jozef Peeters came to an abrupt halt in 1930. In that year, he abandoned painting and ceased all other artistic activities. This sudden withdrawal from the art world left his personal environment as a preserved capsule of his modernist convictions. He continued to live in the four-room corner apartment on quai de Gerlache in Antwerp, a space where architecture and plastic arts had been integrated through his own hand-designed furniture and decor.

Peeters died in 1960 in Belgium. Following his death, his daughter, Godelieve, maintained the residence, leaving the apartment-atelier and the artist's archives untouched. Upon her death in 2009, she bequeathed the entire collection—including the works, furniture, and personal objects—to the city of Antwerp. This legacy ensures that the specific atmosphere of his living and working space remains intact for historical study.

The apartment-atelier transitioned from a private residence to a public site in September 2013. Visitors can now enter the space to see the intersection of his design and his life, where the walls and ceilings still bear the traces of his unique color combinations and asymmetrical compositions. The site remains open to the public, functioning as a physical record of his final decades.
