A Life of Exploration and Art
Marius Perret was a French painter and watercolorist born in Moulins, France. His academic journey was diverse; he earned a baccalaureate in letters in 1869 and a baccalaureate in sciences in 1871. Following his studies, he entered the faculty of medicine in Paris, where he was admitted to the externship in 1873. Alongside his medical pursuits, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts as a student of Alexandre Cabanel.
His travels took him across vast landscapes, beginning with three years spent in the Algerian Sahara between 1884 and 1886, specifically in Laghouat, Mzab, and among the Chaouia. In 1890, he traveled to Senegal, where he joined the expedition of Colonel Alfred Dodds, serving as a substitute physician for the battalion. During this time, he captured the daily life of the fishermen of Guet n’Dar in the Saint-Louis district. His journeys eventually led him to Asia, where he died in Java.
