The Studio at Gobelins
Michel Corneille the Younger lived his life within the walls of Paris, moving through the spaces of the Gobelins manufactory where he eventually spent his final days. He was born into a family of painters, the son of Michel Corneille the Elder. His early training began at home, under the steady hand of his father, before he sought out the guidance of Pierre Mignard and Charles Le Brun. These teachers shaped how he approached a canvas, teaching him to handle the weight of historical subjects.
His hands were busy with many forms of mark-making. He worked as a painter, etcher, engraver, and draughtsman. There was also the work of a muralist and a commercial artist involved in his daily practice. Much of his time was spent on the heavy tasks of historical painting, focusing on religious and mythological scenes that required a careful eye for composition.
Lines and Light
The way he drew showed a preference for precision. His lines were often described as careful and exact. When he worked with etching, his early plates possessed a bold and free quality, though later work became more controlled and precise. He looked toward the Carracci and the influence of the Eclectics to find his way, modeling his style on their methods of composition.
In his paintings, the management of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, was a central part of his technique. He brought a certain dignity to the faces of his religious subjects. While contemporary records suggest he had a refined sense of color, the actual pigments used in many of his works have changed over time, sometimes leaving the colors looking different than they did when the paint was fresh. His compositions often drew from the Venetian School, using light to organize the figures within the frame.
Royal Commissions and Church Walls
His career was marked by the places where his work remains fixed. He decorated the antechamber of the Queen's Apartments at the Palace of Versailles and contributed to the decoration of Meudon and Fontainebleau. His brush also touched the walls of Paris churches, including Notre-Dame and the chapel of Saint-Grégoire in the Invalides.
Some of his known works include:
- Aspasia among Greek Philosophers
- Iris and Jupiter
- The Calling of Peter and Andrew
- Allegory of Geometry
- The Purification of Aeneas
He was a member of the Royal Academy, entering in 1663, later becoming an adjunct in 1673, and reaching the rank of full professor in 1690. His life ended in 1708 at the Gobelins manufactory in Paris.
