      Early Life, Family and Training

Norman MacLeish was born on August 29, 1890, in Glencoe, Illinois. He grew up on a palatial estate called Craig Lea, which looked out over Lake Michigan. His upbringing was shaped by parents who were advocates for progressive education; his mother, Martha Hilliard, served as the president of Rockford College, while his father was a business leader and one of the founders of the University of Chicago.

The family included several siblings, such as his brother Kenneth MacLeish, his sister Ishbel Campbell, and his brother Archibald MacLeish. His early years in Illinois provided a backdrop of structured, influential surroundings before he moved toward his formal studies. He attended Williams College and later the University of Pennsylvania.

His technical training took him from the Midwest to Europe. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later traveled to Paris to study with Pierre Vignal. These years of study helped form the foundation for his later work as a painter and graphic artist.

      Artistic Style and Professional Career

His work as a painter and graphic artist followed an ordered, edited, and stylized approach. He focused on the American Scene, often stripping away unnecessary clutter to find a specific rhythm in his subjects. This method allowed him to capture the essence of a landscape or a setting through a controlled lens. During the 1930s, he worked in Chicago as a supervisor for the WPA art program, overseeing local creative efforts during a period of significant social change. His presence in the Chicago Society of Artists marked his place within the regional art community.

Later, his focus shifted toward the coast. He became involved with the Saint Augustine artist colony in Florida, a move that integrated him into a different landscape of light and community. He helped found the St. Augustine Arts Center, contributing to the establishment of local creative spaces. His career moved between the structured urban environments of the Midwest and the more relaxed, coastal atmosphere of the South, always maintaining a steady hand in his compositions.

      Key Works and Exhibitions

His work often focused on the quietude of the American landscape. In 1936, he completed Coal Yard, a watercolor using brush, ink, and pencil on paper. This piece captures a specific stillness. By 1937, he moved to oil on canvas for Southern Indiana. The painting depicts the undulating hills, known locally as knobs, with farm buildings sitting in the middle of the scene. He used light and shadow to shape the landscape, showing the hills and trees without the presence of people.

His paintings traveled to several major venues during the late 1930s and early 1940s. He showed his work at the New York World’s Fair in 1939 and at the Golden Gate International Exhibition in San Francisco that same year. In 1940, his work was included in the Fifty-First Annual Exhibition of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago. He also exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art biennial in 1941.

      Later Years and Death

During his career, MacLeish moved to Florida. He became involved with the Saint Augustine artist colony and helped found the St. Augustine Arts Center. His presence in the region left a mark on the local art scene before the center eventually ceased to exist.

He died in Naples, Florida, on August 19, 1975. He was 84 years old at the time. He left behind his children, two sons, Andrew and Roderick, and a daughter, Lenore Platt.
