A Life Shaped by Many Landscapes
Robert Bledsoe Mayfield began his life in Carlinville, Illinois, but the world soon expanded far beyond the borders of his birthplace. As a young boy, he lived in Europe, attending school in Germany and Switzerland. These early years abroad likely planted the seeds for a life defined by observation and movement. His formal training eventually brought him to the St. Louis Academy of Art, which later became part of Washington University, before he sought further instruction at the Julien Academy in Paris. There, he studied under masters such as Jules Lefebvre, Gabriel Ferrier, and Luc-Olivier Merson.
After a brief period working as an artist for the St. Louis Dispatch, Mayfield moved to New Orleans in 1891. This city would become his home for the rest of his life. He did not merely live there; he became deeply embedded in its cultural fabric. He took on roles that allowed him to engage with the local community through words and art, serving as an assistant editor for the arts at the New Orleans Times-Picayune and later as an associate editor for the Times-Democrat, where he wrote the paper's Art and Music revue.
The Art of Observation
Mayfield’s work was characterized by a quiet focus on the world around him. He was a painter and an etcher who found beauty in the specificities of his surroundings. His repertoire included landscapes, interiors, and portraits, often rendered in oil. He also possessed a talent for the delicate line of etching, using it to create sensitive records of New Orleans architecture. His etchings, such as Barracks Street, New Orleans, captured the character of the city's streets with precision.
His artistic output was not limited to large canvases. He also worked with:
- Caricature sketches, including a notable piece of artist Alexander John Drysdale from 1892.
- Drawings that captured fleeting moments and architectural details.
- Oil paintings that explored light and space within interiors and natural settings.
A Lasting Presence in New Orleans
Beyond his personal studio practice, Mayfield was a dedicated member of the institutions that supported the arts. He served on the executive committee for the New Orleans Art Association and sat on the committee for painting and sculpture at the New Orleans Museum of Art. His commitment to the preservation and promotion of art in Louisiana was evident in his professional roles and his museum service.
Today, much of what he created remains accessible to those who visit the New Orleans Museum of Art. Works such as In the Studio and The Giant Oak reside in their permanent collections, keeping his vision of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries alive. When he passed away in New Orleans in 1934, he left behind a body of work that remains a quiet, detailed record of the places and people that shaped his long life.
