The Life and Artistic Journey of Robert Lotiron
Born in Paris, France, Robert Lotiron was a painter and graphic artist. His early education included studying the violin, an instrument he continued to practice within amateur quartets. While initially destined for his father's lace trading business, his interest in art was sparked by an impressionist collection. He studied at the Académie Julian under Jules Lefebvre and later at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts under Tony Robert-Fleury. His artistic path led him to participate in the Salon d'automne, becoming a member in 1913, and he remained a regular contributor until his death in Rueil-Malmaison.
During the First World War, Lotiron served in the automobile service in the Somme and Oise, tasked with transporting material and moving combatants. His drawings from this period focused on the daily gestures of military life, such as reading, eating, and cleaning, rather than the horrors of war. He later described his creative process as painting for his own pleasure and torment.
Themes and Artistic Contributions
Lotiron's work spanned various subjects, including the city of Paris, the banks of the Seine, and the landscapes of Brittany, Normandy, and the environs of Rueil-Malmaison. His repertoire included scenes of summer days, tennis matches, and various ports such as Dieppe, Calais, and Cannes. He also produced works depicting harvests and scenes from the village of Villennes-sur-Seine. His technical range extended to:
In addition to his paintings, he contributed to several collaborative works and illustrated books, including works by Guy de Maupassant. He was also involved in large-scale projects, such as the murals Les Canotiers for the Grand Rex cinema in 1932 and panels for the 1937 Exposition universelle. His career was marked by several honors, including being named a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur and serving as the president of the Salon d'automne in 1962.
