A Life Shaped by the Light of Europe
Rudolph Thygesen began his life in 1880, finding his early footing in Oslo. His beginnings as a painter were rooted in the guidance of those who had already walked the path of the brush. He first studied under Harriet Backer and spent time in the open-air studio of Christian Skredsvig at Berg in Eggedal. These early years provided a foundation of Norwegian landscape and light, but his curiosity eventually pulled him toward the great art centers of the continent.
The movement of his life took him through Munich, where he attended the Anton Ažbe School, and later to Paris. In the French capital, he found himself at the Académie Colarossi and later returned between 1919 and 1920 to study under André Lhothe. This period of wandering through different schools and cities allowed him to absorb various ways of seeing. He also sought knowledge in Copenhagen at Kristian Zahrtmann's school, gathering influences from across the borders of Norway.
The Evolution of a Painter
Thygesen’s work underwent a noticeable change as he matured. In his earlier years, he focused on impressionist landscapes, capturing the fleeting qualities of the natural world. However, as he encountered the many shifts in modern art, his approach shifted. He moved away from those initial impressions toward compositions that were more harmonic and decorative in nature. This transition reflected a deeper interest in structure and balance.
His talent extended beyond the canvas to larger architectural spaces. He was able to execute several frescoes and wall decorations, bringing his sense of composition to a much larger scale. While he drew inspiration from Edvard Munch, Thyges and his contemporaries were part of a broader conversation about how color and form could be used to decorate a space.
Legacy and Recognition
Throughout his career, Thygesen left behind a body of work that remains part of the Norwegian artistic record. His pieces have been held in important collections, including the National Museum of Norway. One notable work from 1937, titled Tre generasjoner, stands as a significant piece of his later output.
The presence of his work in the art market has also been noted through various auction records. His paintings have reached prices such as 36,184 USD, and his total auction turnover reflects a steady recognition of his skill. He is remembered not only for his paintings but also by the monogram RTH, which he used to sign his work.
