The Academy and the Sea
Berlin, 1872. Ulrich Hübner enters a world shaped by art, born into a family where the brush is a primary language. His path follows a structured academic trajectory, beginning in 1892 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. Under the guidance of Robert Poetzelberger, Gustav Schönleber, and Carlos Grethe, he refines the technical foundations of his craft. The training moves from the lecture halls of Karlsruhe to the private studios of Munich, where Friedrich Fehr directs his focus.
The landscape shifts as his gaze turns toward the water. During the summers, the artist finds himself in Hamburg, Lübeck, Rostock, and Travemünde. It is here, between 1909 and 1912, that he establishes a principal residence, anchoring his identity to the coast. The salt air and the movement of the docks become his primary subjects. He specializes in harbor scenes, capturing the heavy presence of ships and the rhythmic life of maritime commerce.
The Berlin Secession and Recognition
By 1899, Hübner is no longer merely a student but a recognized participant in the Berlin Secession. His involvement deepens over the following decade; by 1906 and 1907, he sits on the advisory board of this progressive society. This period marks a peak in his professional standing within the German art scene. In 1905, he receives the Villa Romana prize, an honor that underscores his growing reputation.
His versatility extends beyond the canvas into the realm of commercial design. In 1906 and 1907, he secures a prize for advertising designs from Ludwig and Otto Stollwerck of the Stollwerck chocolate company. This intersection of fine art and commercial utility defines much of his output during these years. His work is not confined to oil; he works as a draughtsman, etcher, lithographer, and commercial artist.
A Legacy in Ink and Oil
The breadth of his repertoire includes everything from portraits, such as Frau Douglas (Irma Hübner), to the starker realities of maritime life. His collections are scattered across significant institutions, including the Behnhaus museum in Lübeck and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Even the Museum of Modern Art holds a piece of his history through a lithograph from 1914.
The final years of his life see him in Neubabelsberg, where he passes away in 1932. His work remains tied to the specific geography of his travels:
- Maritime Subjects: Harbor scenes in Travemünde, ships in the Kieler Förde, and the docks of St.-Pauli-Landungsbrücken.
- River Landscapes: Boote auf der Havel and views of the Stadtkanal in Potsdam.
- Technical Range: Pen and ink with water wash, lithography, and oil painting.
