Born in Avignon, France, Auguste Roure began his professional life as an apprentice engraver and lithographer in a printing house. After being admitted to the École des beaux-arts d'Avignon, he became part of the Nouvelle école d'Avignon, a group of regional artists seeking to move away from academicism in favor of a more direct observation of nature. Roure was known for his deep connection to the landscapes of Provence. He often traveled through the Vaucluse on a bicycle, carrying his easel to capture the natural world through direct observation. He became particularly celebrated for his depictions of the garrigues—the arid, rocky landscapes of the region—earning him the reputation as a "painter of the garrigues."
