      1897 - 1919

      The Dreamer of Pakri

The light in Paldiski carries a specific weight, one that follows Balder Tomasberg from his birth in 1897 into the quiet, focused atmosphere of Tallinn. By 1913, the draughtsman's hand is already accustomed to the precision required by construction companies, yet the pull of the Estonian Art Society is stronger. Under the guidance of Nikolai Triik, the technical discipline of a draughtsman begins to dissolve into something more fluid. The years between 1913 and 1915 are a period of rapid internal shifts, moving from the rigid lines of architectural sketches toward the soft, uncertain edges of fine art.

War interrupts the trajectory of a developing style. Drafted into the Imperial Russian Army, Tomasberg finds himself in Novgorod, far from the Estonian coast. Here, the focus shifts to the ephemeral; he works as a decorator of stage sets for soldier theatres. This period of designing illusions for the stage likely deepened his affinity for the theatrical and the unreal, a skill that would later define his visual language.

The Vikerla Circle and the Pakri Islands

Returning to Estonia in 1917, Tomasberg finds a landscape in flux. He joins forces with the sculptor Roman Haavamägi to form the Vikerla artist circle. This group, composed of students of Ants Laikmaa, seeks a shared identity through their work. The group settles in the Pakri Islands, an art colony where the environment dictates the subject matter. The landscapes here are not mere topography; they become the foundation for a specific, otherworldly vision.

His output during this period is defined by a specific set of technical choices and thematic obsessions:

      • The use of pastel and watercolour to achieve ethereal textures.
      • A focus on graphic arts that emphasize line and form.
      • The creation of dream-like and fantastic landscapes.
      • Thematic explorations of the Pakri Islands.

      A Brief, Final Light

The autumn of 1918 brings the Vikerla group's exhibition to the public, showcasing the works Tomasberg contributed from the island colony. The momentum of his career is abruptly cut short by the Estonian War of Independence. He volunteers for the fight, trading the pastel and the brush for the realities of combat. The end comes quickly. Three months after volunteering, he is mortally wounded near Saint Petersburg, leaving behind a body of work that remains anchored in the realm of the fantastic.
