Based in Auckland, New Zealand, Chris Heaphy is a painter whose work explores cultural issues, specifically focusing on the relationship between Māori and Pākehā. Born in Palmerston North, Heaphy is of Ngāi Tahu and European descent. His formal training includes a BFA from the Ilam school of Fine Arts in Canterbury and an MFA in painting from RMIT University in Melbourne. His career has been marked by various accolades, such as the Te Waka Toi Grant, the Olivia Spencer Bower Award, and a residency at the Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin in Champagne, France.

Heaphy’s stylistic journey has seen a transition from subdued tones in his earlier compositions to the vibrant colors found in his later works.
