The Geometry of Silence
Born in Lokeren, Belgium, in 1927, Dan Van Severen lived a life defined by the pursuit of an essential, stripped-back truth. His path through the arts was shaped by rigorous training at the Saint Luke institute in Ghent and later at the National Higher Institute for the Fine Arts in Antwerp. He did not seek to overwhelm the viewer with excess; instead, he moved toward a radical simplicity. As a founding member of the G.58-Hessenhuis group in Antwerp, he helped establish a space where formal experimentation could take root. His work often functioned as an intersection between two opposing forces: a deep, romantic longing for the universal and a disciplined, ascetic devotion to form.
The evolution of his technique was marked by a deliberate shedding of weight. While his early years involved the use of oil painting, he eventually moved away from the medium by 1969, seeking to escape its material consequences. He turned instead to more economical means, utilizing tempera, ink, charcoal, and grease pencil. This shift allowed him to focus on a reduced alphabet of shapes—the line, the square, the circle, the cross, and the lozenge. These motifs were not mere decorations but tools for an investigation into the relationship between foreground and background, or paper and ink.
A Search for Absolute Form
Van Severen’s compositions were characterized by a profound formal sobriety. He utilized known, existing shapes rather than attempting to invent new ones, believing that the universal power of a cross or a circle required no further embellishment. His process was often slow and meditative. He might spend hours contemplating a single line or rework a single painting up to thirty times, scraping and rubbing the surface until the proportions matched the ideal version held in his mind. This meticulousness resulted in works that felt autonomous, standing apart from the viewer through a calculated distance.
His later production focused heavily on the interplay of vertical and horizontal axes. The following elements defined much of his mature output:
- The use of the cross as a symbol of opposing elements meeting in a central point.
- A reliance on geometric motifs such as the rectangle, oval, and square.
- An exploration of the tension between the physical medium and the perceived space.
Even when he moved toward more figurative subjects, such as his floral works in the 1980s, the underlying structural discipline remained. His art was a continuous attempt to reach a state of absolute finality, where the painting achieved its own internal logic without needing to communicate external narratives. When he passed away in 2009, he left behind an oeuvre that remains a study in the power of reduction.
