The Artistic Journey of Debra Dawes
Born in Goondiwindi, Australia, Debra Dawes has established herself as a prominent figure in Australian abstract art. Her academic foundation began with an Art Certificate at TAFE in Newcastle, followed by an Art Diploma at the College of Advanced Education in Newcastle. She furthered her expertise by obtaining a Post-Graduate Diploma in Painting at the Sydney College of the Arts and eventually completed a doctorate of creative arts at the University of Wollongong in 2000. Throughout her career, she has been a lecturer and Director of the Graduate Program at the Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney.
Her practice is characterized by reductive abstract painting, where she utilizes alternating colours, patterns, and geometric forms. Through her use of formal structures such as grids, planes, volume, space, and line, her work explores themes including personal experience, the relationship between knowledge and perception, feminist theory, power relations, and the critique of political language and institutional structures.

Debra Dawes has maintained an extensive exhibition history, holding over 25 solo exhibitions and participating in more than 60 group exhibitions. Her work has been showcased in various locations, including:

Additionally, her work is part of collections at Murdoch University, the University of Queensland, and the University of Wollongong, alongside various private and regional collections.
