      1923 - 2012

The Evolution of Form and Light

Paris, 1923. The beginning of a life that would eventually bridge the gap between the heavy, tactile reality of the figurative and the ethereal transparency of abstraction. Trained initially as a theater decorator, Gérard Altmann approached the canvas with a sense of spatial drama. His early works are defined by a certain weight; he utilized thick, heavy matter and dark tones to ground his subjects in a physical, almost burdensome reality. This period of his development focused on the tangible, where the paint itself possessed a sculptural presence.

As the years progressed, a fundamental shift occurred in his technique. The density of his early years gave way to a new language of light. He moved toward an abstraction that favored lightness and transparency, stripping away the heavy impasto to find a more fluid way of seeing. This transition was not a sudden break but a gradual refinement of how he perceived the interaction between light and surface.

A Dual Legacy of Landscape and Abstraction

His career is marked by a tension between two distinct modes of observation. While his formal evolution moved toward the abstract, his gaze remained deeply rooted in the physical world. His technical range allowed him to navigate various mediums, each serving a specific purpose in his exploration of form:

      • Oil paintings used to ground scenes in texture, particularly in his studies of cattle and riverbanks.
      • Watercolors and drawings employed for immediate, fluid observations of the landscape.
      • Prints and etchings used to experiment with the sharp bite of line and shadow.

This versatility allowed him to capture the essence of a scene through different lenses. Whether he was working with the soft wash of a watercolor or the precise line of a lithograph, the objective remained the same: to record the way light hits a subject, whether it be a cow in a field or a boat resting on the water.

      Recognition and Retrospective

The trajectory of his work eventually led to significant institutional recognition. In 2007, the Musée de Morlaix hosted a retrospective titled "Gérard Altmann. Un regard sur 50 ans de peinture," a look back at five decades of his evolving vision. Represented by Galerie Daniel Besseiche in Paris, his work moved through the hands of collectors and museums, including the Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo. His ability to transition from the heavy, dark tones of his youth to the light-filled abstractions of his later years remains the defining characteristic of his artistic output until his death in 2012.
