      Early Life, Family and Training

Hubert Levigne enters the world in Meerssen, the son of Nicolas Joseph Levigne and Elisabeth Ramakers. His upbringing takes place in Maastricht, a setting that shapes his early visual development. At sixteen, he begins working in a ceramics factory, an office job that quickly gives way to a more hands-on role. His talent for graphics becomes apparent to those around him, leading to his appointment as an assistant to the engraver, where he focuses on decorating ceramics.

The path toward formal mastery leads him to the Stadsteekeninstituut in Maastricht. Under the guidance of Henri Jonas, Levigne undergoes rigorous training in drawing and painting. This foundation prepares him for a significant move to Amsterdam. Between 1928 and 1932, he enters the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, a period of intense academic study that defines his technical capabilities. Here, the curriculum is shaped by the instruction of Jan Aarts, who focuses on graphics, and Rik Roland Holst, who introduces the principles of monumental art.

      Professional Career and Commissions

The 1920s find Levigne immersed in the cultural pulse of Maastricht. He spends his evenings at the Café Suisse on the Vrijthof, a gathering point for the Bende van De Suisse, where painters, architects, and poets congregate. This social landscape is matched by his formal professional affiliations, including membership in the Nederlandsche Vereeniging voor Ambachts- en Nijverheidskunst. After completing his training in Amsterdam in 1933 and securing a silver medal at the Prix de Rome, he returns to Maastricht to establish his practice.

His professional output shifts between the intimate and the monumental. He accepts diverse commissions, ranging from the small scale of postage stamps, ex libris, and occasional graphics to the expansive requirements of ecclesiastical art. In 1950, he turns his hand to book illustration, providing the imagery for the religious text Het Prentenboek van Jezus' Leven. His career is defined by this versatility, moving from the precision of graphic design to the heavy, light-filtering demands of stained glass and tile work.

By 1950, Levigne enters the academic sphere. He is appointed as a professor of graphic design at the Jan van Eyck Academy, a position he holds for over two decades until his retirement in 1972. This teaching tenure anchors his influence in the region, shaping the next generation of designers while he continues to manage his own extensive portfolio of public and private commissions.

      Techniques and Artistic Mediums

The precision of the engraver defines much of his technical output. Levigne works through the resistance of metal and wood, utilizing copper engravings, etchings, and woodcuts to achieve specific textures. He often merges techniques, employing a combination of etchings and aquatint to manipulate light and shadow. His approach to copper engraving provides a new impulse to the medium, pushing the boundaries of how lines and tones interact on the plate.

Beyond the small scale of printmaking, his practice shifts toward the monumental. He moves from the delicate control of the etching needle to the heavy, structural demands of stained glass and tile pictures. As a master of stained glass and wood etching, he translates graphic sensibilities into permanent architectural fixtures. His work with tile tableaus and mosaic-like tile pictures demonstrates a capacity to bridge the gap between fine graphic design and large-scale decorative art.

      • Tile mosaic in Sphinxkantoor, Maastricht about 1956

Notable Stained Glass and Mosaic Works

Light filters through the glass of the Sint-Monulphus en Gondulphuskerk in Berg, where Levigne’s work spans the years between 1942 and 1950. This period marks a heavy concentration of ecclesiastical commissions. In 1948, the artist’s hand appears in the Johannes de Doperkerk in Katwijk aan den Rijn and the H.H. Nicolaas en Barbarakerk in Valkenburg. The momentum continues into the following years as he works on the Sint-Petrus' Bandenkerk in Heer from 1948 to 1951.

The scale of his glasswork expands in the Sint-Nicolaaskerk in Schalkhaar, where twelve windows were produced in 1950 and 1964. Beyond the translucent medium of glass, Levigne applied his technical precision to more solid surfaces. Around 1956, he executed a tile mosaic located in the Sphinxkantoor in Maastricht.

      • Two memorial windows of the Limburg evacuees (1949) in front of the provinciehuis in Leeuwarden
      • Six stained glass windows (1951–1952) for the chapel of the college of the Montfortians in Schimmert
      • Stained glass (1952) for the Sint-Dionysiuskerk in Asselt
      • Three stained glass windows (1954) for the Maria Gorettikerk in Kerkrade
      • Stained glass (1965) in Amstelveen

      Later Years and Death

The academic chapter of Levigne's life reaches its conclusion in 1972. After decades of shaping the next generation of graphic designers at the Jan van Eyck Academy, he steps away from his professorship. The transition from the classroom to a more private existence is marked by a change in geography. He moves to Spain, spending several years within its borders after his retirement.

The Mediterranean period is a temporary departure. Eventually, the pull of the Netherlands brings him back to the Limburg region. He returns to the area where his career began, settling back into the familiar landscape of his roots. The final chapter of his life concludes in Sittard, Netherlands, where he dies on 29 December 1989.
