      Early Life, Family and Training

Louis Chéron entered a world where art was a family trade. Born in Paris on 2 September 1660, he was raised within a French Protestant family of artists. This lineage provided more than just a name; it provided a technical foundation. His father, Henri Chéron, worked as a miniaturist and engraver, while his elder sister, Elizabeth-Sophie Chéron, established herself as a painter and engraver. For Louis Chéron, art was an inherited language, spoken fluently within his own household.

His formal education followed a rigorous, traditional path. He began his training under the direct supervision of his father, absorbing the precision required for engraving and miniature work. This early instruction provided the technical discipline necessary for his later versatility as a painter, illustrator, and art tutor. After mastering these fundamentals at home, he moved into the institutional sphere of French art, training at the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. This progression from private familial instruction to the most prestigious academy in France defined his early professional development.

Life and Activity in Rome and France

Chéron’s technical authority was established through his repeated success at the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. He secured the prix de Rome in 1676 and repeated the feat in 1678. These victories facilitated essential trips to Rome, where his development was shaped by direct study of Raphael and Giulio Romano. This period provided the formal foundation that would define his subsequent professional standing in France.

Upon returning to France, his reputation secured several significant commissions. However, his career in his homeland was cut short by political and religious shifts. The revocation of the edict of Nantes in 1685 triggered intense persecutions against French Protestants. This environment made his continued practice in France untenable. He chose to leave the country, a decision driven by the necessity of escaping these religious pressures.

      Life and Activity in London

Chéron’s arrival in London was marked by his presence in the registers of the Huguenot congregation at the Savoy Chapel in 1693. He did not remain a transient figure; by 1710, he was a naturalised Briton. His professional footprint in England was substantial, spanning major architectural and decorative projects. He worked on Montague House between 1706 and 1712, and his influence extended to the interiors of Burghley House and Chatsworth House. These were not minor assignments. He was also among the five artists selected to submit drawings for the dome of St Paul's Cathedral.

His technical versatility was evident in his collaboration with James Thornhill, with whom he produced engraved images. This period of his life was defined by institutional shifts and the establishment of new educational structures. In 1718, Chéron and John Vanderbank broke away from the Great Queen Street Academy, which they had been teaching at under Godfrey Kneller. Instead, they formed the St. Martin's Lane Academy. This move signaled a decisive break from the existing academic order of the time.
