A life between Liège and Naples

The traces of Niccolò de Simone suggest a man moving through the borders of Europe. Born in Liège, he carried his Flemish roots into the heart of the Kingdom of Naples. His presence in the city is felt most strongly during the middle decades of the seventeenth century, specifically between 1636 and 1654. While some records place his activity slightly later, the brushstrokes left behind in Neapolitan churches anchor him to this specific time and place.

He worked under various names, sometimes referred to as Nicolò Fiammingo or Lo Zet. This variety of names follows a painter who likely navigated different social circles and commissions. His movement was not limited to Italy; there are accounts suggesting his hand reached into Spain and Portugal, though his most enduring marks remain in the chapels of Naples.

      The weight of the brush

His work carries the heavy, physical presence of the Baroque style. In the quiet corners of the Church of San Lorenzo Maggiore, one finds his frescoes decorating the Capella Cacace and the Saint Roch chapel. These are not light or airy decorations but works that demand attention through their substance. He used oil on canvas to capture religious narratives, often focusing on the gravity of the subject matter.

The compositions often lean into the influence of those working in the same Neapolitan orbit. One can see the shadows and light shaped by the presence of Jusepe de Ribera, Massimo Stanzione, Bernardo Cavallino, and Mattia Preti. His paintings, such as The Beheading of Saint John Baptist or Saint Agatha, show a focus on the human form and the tension of religious drama. He also applied his skill to fresco, allowing his art to become part of the very architecture of the buildings he served.

A legacy in stone and pigment

The survival of his work depends on the preservation of the spaces he touched. His religious paintings were intended for specific altars and chapels, meant to be viewed by those kneeling in prayer. Some of these pieces have found their way into collections far from Naples, such as the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, where a painting attributed to him remains held in trust.

His contribution to the Neapolitan school is seen in the following ways:

      • The integration of Flemish technique with Italian Baroque drama.
      • The execution of large-scale religious frescoes within the San Lorenzo Maggiore complex.
      • The use of oil on canvas to depict intense, muscular figures and mythological themes like Hercules.

He died around 1677, leaving behind a body of work that remains tied to the churches and chapels where he once labored.
