Artistic Career and Recognition

Norbert Schwontkowski was a German painter who studied free painting at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Bremen and the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg between 1968 and 1973. His professional journey included a first solo exhibition in 1973 at the Kunstschau Böttcherstraße in Bremen. Throughout his career, he participated in various group and solo exhibitions across New Zealand, the Netherlands, and Italy.

His contributions to the art world were recognized through several prestigious honors, including the Bremer Förderpreis für Bildende Kunst in 1985. In 1994, he was awarded the Bremer Kunstpreis, alongside Andreas Slominski, and received the Overbeck-Preis für Bildende Kunst. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, such as the 4. Berlin Biennale and various shows in cities including New York, Tokyo, Amsterdam, and Zurich.

Style and Academic Contributions

The paintings of Norbert Schwontkowski often focus on figurative themes that engage with the surreal and the unconscious. His compositions frequently feature figures and motifs that appear to float within vast, undefined spaces.

In addition to his practice as a painter, Schwontkowski was a university teacher. He held teaching positions in Bremen and Greifswald, served as a guest professor in Braunschweig, and held a professorship for painting at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg until 2009. His works are held in various private and public collections both within Germany and internationally.
