Early Life, Family and Training
Norman Parish entered the world on August 26, 1937, in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the son of Vieran Lockett Parish and the late Norman Parish, Sr. Though his beginnings were rooted in the unique atmosphere of New Orleans, his upbringing took place in Chicago. This move would eventually shape the perspective he brought to his later creative endeavors.
His formal training began in earnest as he pursued his studies in the Windy City. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago, where he honed his technical skills and developed his eye for composition. By 1960, he had graduated from the institute, marking the transition from a student of form to a professional practitioner of his craft.
Family remained a constant presence throughout his life. He was joined in his later years by his beloved wife, Gwen B. Parish, who would become a vital partner in his professional life. His legacy is carried on through his children, Norman Parish III, Kimberly Parish-Perkins, and Malcolm Muhammad.
Artistic Activity in Chicago
During his years in Chicago, Parish moved within a circle of politically active artists who sought to reflect the spirit of their community. This period of his life was marked by a shared ambition to bring visibility to the experiences of African Americans through public expression. He was among a group of creators who gathered to contribute to a significant mural known as the Wall of Respect. This work was painted on the South Side of Chicago, transforming a local building into a site of collective memory.
The mural itself was composed of images that celebrated African American achievement. It was a large-scale effort that sought to honor the dignity and history of a people through visual storytelling. Though the mural was a powerful presence in the neighborhood, its physical existence was temporary. The building that held these painted images was razed in 1973, leaving only the memory of the work and the impact it had on those who saw it.
The Parish Gallery in Washington, DC
After moving to Washington, DC in 1988, Parish sought a way to support the many talented creators he knew were struggling to find an audience. This ambition led him to open the Parish Gallery in 1991 within the Georgetown neighborhood. At that time, the establishment was one of the few black-owned galleries in the city. He did not work alone in this endeavor; his wife, Gwen, co-managed the space from its inception until the very end. Together, they created a space where the art of the African diaspora could find a dedicated home.
The gallery became a significant hub for both African American and international artists. It was a place where the local community gathered, often accompanied by the sounds of jazz playing in the background. Over the years, the walls held the work of more than 170 artists. These creators traveled from many different lands to have their work seen, including those from Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa, and Morocco, as well as artists from Greece, Turkey, Brazil, Spain, and France.
Later Years and Death
As the years progressed, the health of Norman Parish began to decline, casting a shadow over the lively atmosphere he had cultivated in Georgetown. Despite his physical struggles, his presence remained a steady force in the local community. In his final months, the gallery slowed its pace, yet it continued to offer a window into his personal vision through his landscape paintings. These works reflected the quiet beauty he observed in the surroundings of his life.
The end of an era arrived in 2013, a year that marked both the conclusion of his professional legacy and his own passing. The Parish Gallery, which had served as a vital sanctuary for many artists, finally closed its doors that same year. Shortly before his death, the gallery hosted a final exhibition titled "Norman Parish: The Artist," a tribute to the man who had spent decades championing the work of others. He passed away on July 8, 2013, in Germantown, Maryland, U.S.
