      1839 - 1904

A Life in Light and Glass

Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1839, Rudolf Geyling entered a world where the boundaries between fine art and craftsmanship were often blurred. He was the son of Franz Geyling, a painter of historical subjects, and this lineage provided a foundation for a career that would eventually span both the canvas and the stained-glass window. His early training took place at the Vienna Academy, where he refined the technical precision required for both academic painting and the delicate demands of glasswork.

His development as an artist was marked by a significant period of study and travel. After receiving a scholarship to study in Italy, he spent much of 1872 and 1873 immersed in the Mediterranean light and classical traditions. This period of exploration helped shape his ability to handle color and form, qualities that would later define his contributions to ecclesiastical art.

      The Art of the Window

While his training was rooted in the academic traditions of Vienna, Geyling found a specific calling in the medium of glass. He became a skilled glass painter, focusing his efforts on the creation of stained-glass panels that transformed the interior atmosphere of religious spaces. His work was not merely decorative; it was an integration of light and narrative designed for the solemnity of the church.

His technical versatility allowed him to move between different modes of expression:

His reach extended into the most significant religious sites in Austria. His glasswork can be found in various churches, including the Cathedral of St. Stephen in Vienna, where his panels interact with the shifting light of the nave.

      A Quiet Legacy

Geyling’s output was diverse, ranging from the creation of religious glass to the reproduction of significant portraits. One notable example of his skill in portraiture was his work on "The Family of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII," which he executed after the original by Heinrich von Angeli. This ability to translate the work of others with accuracy speaks to his disciplined hand and respect for established composition.

He remained active in the artistic community of the Austrian Empire until his death in 1904 in Ybbs an der Donau. He left behind a body of work that bridged the gap between the academic painter and the specialized artisan, ensuring his presence in the architectural fabric of the regions he served.
