      1882 - 1941

      The Shadow of the Academy

Freiburg im Breisgau, 1882. Rudolf Wilhelm Walther Großmann enters a world where art is already a family language. His grandfather, Wilhelm Dürr, holds the position of court painter in Baden, and his mother, Marie, captures faces through her portraiture. This lineage provides more than just names; it provides a foundation of technique.

The path begins not with a brush, but with medicine and philosophy. In Munich, between 1902 and 1904, the young man studies the complexities of the human condition before turning toward the Dusseldorf Academy. The shift is decisive. Paris follows, a five-year immersion where he sits under Lucien Simon and Poulerauce. Here, the influence of Paul Cézanne begins to settle into his work. He focuses on landscapes, finding a rhythm in the natural world that will later inform his cityscapes.

Berlin and the Line of the Century

The scene shifts to Berlin. The quietude of landscape painting gives way to the frantic energy of the metropolis. Großmann becomes a fixture of the city's cultural pulse, his work appearing in the pages of the satirical magazine Simplicissimus. He finds a specific niche: the portrait. He captures the faces of celebrities and contemporary figures with a loose, delicate linework that avoids heavy-handedness.

His social and professional circles are dense with talent. He moves through the same spaces as Jules Pascin and Georg Grosz. In these years, his hand masters various mediums:

      • Lithography: Creating series like Berliner Bilder ('Berlin Scenes') for publishers such as Bruno Cassier.
      • Etching and Drypoint: Producing works like Vor der Stadt (Near the City).
      • Printmaking: Developing a reputation that leads to his appointment as a Professor at the Royal School of Art in 1928.

He is not merely a creator but a link in a chain, teaching printmaking techniques to students like Sonia Delauney. His membership in the Berlin Secession and the Deutscher Künstlerbund places him at the heart of the German art establishment.

      The Erasure of a Career

1934. The atmosphere in Germany curdles. The rise of the National Socialist government brings an abrupt end to his academic life. He is dismissed from his professorship. The transition from the center of Berlin's art scene to the quiet of his hometown, Freiburg im Breisgau, is a forced retreat.

The destruction of his professional identity becomes systematic. Under the Nazi regime, his work is labeled "degenerate art." The state moves against his output with clinical efficiency, confiscating 206 of his pieces. In 1937, the tragedy reaches a public stage when three of his works are selected to be displayed in the propagandistic Degenerate Art Exhibition. He remains in Freiburg until his death on November 28, 1941.
