A Life Painted in New England Light

Born into a large family of silk manufacturers in South Manchester, Connecticut, Russell Cheney lived a life deeply connected to the landscapes of his home. He was the youngest of eleven children, born on October 16, 1881. His path toward the canvas began after his time at Yale University, where he had been a member of the Skull and Bones society. Though he initially showed little interest in art during his college years, a formal education soon took hold. He moved to New York City to study at the Art Students League under Kenyon Cox and George Bridgman, later traveling to Paris to refine his skills at the Académie Julian under Jean Paul Laurens.

The rhythms of his life often followed the seasons and the need for warmth. Because of poor health, Cheney spent time in a Colorado tuberculosis sanatorium and sought out milder climates during the winter months. These periods of physical struggle did not halt his creative output; instead, they seemed to deepen his connection to the places he inhabited. He found a sense of peace in the summers spent in York and Ogunquit, Maine, where he studied with Charles Woodbury. His work often reflected these quiet, northern corners of America.

      The Brush and the Landscape

Cheney’s approach to painting was marked by a versatility that allowed him to move between different styles and subjects. While he is often associated with American Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, his work also touched upon New England regionalism and modernism. He worked primarily with oil on canvas, board, or panel, and occasionally used pen and wash for drawings. His subjects were as varied as the places he visited, ranging from intimate still lifes and floral studies to expansive landscapes of France, Italy, and the American West.

There is a specific clarity in his depictions of the New England landscape that remains central to his legacy. He captured the essence of local life through works such as:

      • White Birches (1915)
      • Lilies by the Sea (1936)
      • Piscataqua River (ca. 1931)
      • Bridge in Water (ca. 1939)
      • First Snow (1916)

His ability to find beauty in the rural and the everyday allowed him to connect with viewers through a shared recognition of the natural world. Whether painting the trees of Ogunquit or the light hitting a floral arrangement, he maintained a sense of integrity in his compositions.

      A Lasting Presence

Throughout his career, Cheney was an active participant in the art community. He served as the president of the Art Students League for a brief period around 1909 and exhibited his work in significant venues such as the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the San Francisco Museum of Art, and the Wadsworth Atheneum. His life was also marked by deep personal connections, most notably his long-term partnership with the author F. O. Matthiessen, who supported him through much of his later years.

When he passed away on July 12, 1945, in Kittery, Maine, he left behind a substantial body of work that continues to be held in various museum collections and private hands. His paintings remain part of the permanent collections at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts. Through these works, the quiet strength of the New England landscapes he loved so dearly remains visible to anyone who looks closely at his brushwork.
