      1812 - 1891

      Early Life, Family and Training

Born on 4 November 1812 in Overschie, in the Netherlands, Simon van den Berg entered the world as the son of a farmer. His beginnings were rooted in the soil and the quiet rhythms of rural life, a background that would later inform the subjects he chose to capture on canvas. Though his early years were tied to the land, a different calling began to take hold as he matured, leading him away from the fields and toward the studios of the masters.

His formal artistic education began in Rotterdam, where he entered the studio of the painter Moleyn. It was here that the young man first learned to command the brush and understand the weight of color. Seeking to refine his hand, he moved on to study under the draftsman J. de Meijer, whose influence helped sharpen his ability to trace the essential lines of the world around him. This training provided the structural foundation upon which his later observations would be built.

To complete his education, Simon van den Berg sought the guidance of P.G. van Os, a teacher who possessed a particular mastery over the depiction of animals and figures. Under van Os, the nuances of anatomy and the living presence of creatures became central to his developing skill. This lineage of instruction, moving from the generalities of landscape and form to the specificities of life and movement, prepared him for a life dedicated to the study of the natural world.

      Periods of Activity and Residence

The life of Simon van den Berg was marked by a constant movement through the various landscapes of the Netherlands, a wandering that mirrored the shifting light of the scenes he sought to capture. His early years saw him finding his footing in The Hague between 1835 and 1836, before a brief stay in Overschie in 1837. This period of wandering continued through Velsen in 1838 and a return to The Hague in 1839. Such a restless existence suggests a man seeking the perfect light or perhaps the right company to nurture his developing eye.

By 1840, his path led him to the bustling atmosphere of Amsterdam, where he remained until 1842. This urban chapter was followed by a long and settled period in Haarlem, where he resided from 1843 until 1850. It was during these years that his reputation grew alongside his presence in the Dutch art scene. After a brief time in Heemstede around 1852, he found his way back to The Hague in 1854, establishing a residence there that would define much of his later life.

His travels eventually brought him to the final chapter of his days in Arnhem, where he would remain until his passing. This long progression through the cities of the Netherlands allowed him to witness the changing character of the country, from the busy streets of Amsterdam to the quietude of the rural landscapes he so loved to paint.

      Technique, Style and Specialization

A prominent figure of 19th-century Dutch Romanticism, Simon van den Berg found his true calling in the quiet rhythms of the countryside. He possessed a particular affinity for the anatomy and presence of livestock, establishing himself as an important painter of cattle. His brush often wandered through pastoral scenes and rural landscapes, where he captured the gentle movement of shepherds and the heavy, grounded nature of grazing animals. This focus on the living elements of the farmstead allowed him to explore the textures of the natural world with a keen, observant eye.

His talent extended beyond the canvas of oil and the softness of watercolor. He was a versatile hand, working with the precision required for etching and the broad, expressive possibilities of lithography. This technical range allowed him to translate his observations of the Dutch landscape into various mediums, moving between the fine lines of a graphic artist and the layered depth of a painter. His ability to navigate these different disciplines speaks to a disciplined mind that understood both the structural requirements of a drawing and the atmospheric needs of a landscape.

      Later Years and Death

The final decades of his life were marked by significant administrative responsibility within the Dutch art world. After years of establishing his reputation, he transitioned into the halls of institutional leadership. He first took on the role of under-director at the Mauritshuis, a position he held from 1875 until 1880. His dedication to the institution led to his appointment as the director of the Mauritshuis, a post he occupied for nearly a decade until 1889.

As his career reached its twilight, he sought a change in scenery. Around 1889, he moved to Arnhem, leaving behind the busy centers of the Netherlands. He remained in this city until his passing on 8 July 1891 in Arnhem, The Netherlands.
