A Life Between Law and the Sea
Thomas Harold Beament lived a life defined by unexpected transitions. Born in Ottawa in 1898, his early years were shaped by the heavy atmosphere of the First World War. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve as an ordinary seaman, a role that would later inform much of his visual output. After the war, he pursued a different path, enrolling at Osgoode Hall in Toronto to study law. By 1922, he had earned his degree as a Barrister-at-law. Yet, even while studying the complexities of legal practice, he found himself drawn back to the canvas through evening life drawing classes at the Ontario College of Art under J.W. Beatty.
In 1926, Beament moved to Montreal, a city that would become his home for many decades. His professional life remained a blend of various disciplines; he worked as a commercial artist, a draftsman, and an illustrator. This period of his life was marked by a steady movement between the structured world of law and the fluid nature of art. He eventually settled into a full-time career as a painter, though his connection to the sea remained a constant thread in his identity.
The Eye of a War Artist
The Second World War brought Beament back to the naval service in a profound way. He did not merely observe from afar; he served in active combat as the skipper of a minesweeper on North Atlantic patrols. His rank rose steadily, eventually reaching the position of Commander. During this time, he was appointed as an official Canadian war artist for the Royal Canadian Navy. This role allowed him to document the realities of maritime life, from the tension of North Atlantic convoys to the dangerous work of minesweeping in the English Channel.
His paintings from this era capture the grit and movement of naval operations. He documented assault landings and the heavy presence of industry at sea. The Canadian War Museum holds seventy-six of these works, preserving a record of the North Atlantic patrols he led. His style during these years was often described as descriptive realism, focusing on the tangible details of his surroundings.
Exploring the Far North
After retiring from the Naval Reserve in 1947, Beament turned his attention toward the vast landscapes of the Canadian North. He traveled to regions such as Baffin Island, exploring the Arctic alongside other notable figures of the time. These travels led him to study and paint scenes of Inuit life, capturing the people and the environment with a sense of direct observation.
His interest in the Arctic produced work that reached a wide audience beyond the gallery walls. In 1955, his design featuring an Inuit figure was chosen for a ten-cent Canadian Postal Service stamp. This connection between fine art and public imagery remains one of his most recognizable contributions to Canadian visual culture. His ability to translate the quiet strength of Arctic subjects into print and painting helped bring these remote landscapes into the broader Canadian consciousness.
A Legacy in Color and Form
Beament’s technical range was broad, encompassing many different mediums. He worked with oil, watercolor, pastel, and charcoal, as well as lithography and silkscreen. His subjects were equally varied, ranging from portraits and nudes to rugged mountains and seascapes. Throughout his career, he held significant positions within the art community, serving as President of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts from 1964 to 1967.
His work is preserved in several major institutions, ensuring that his perspective on both war and peace remains accessible. Notable collections include:
- National Gallery of Canada
- Montreal Museum of Fine Arts
- Canadian War Museum
- Art Gallery of Ontario
- McMichael Canadian Art Collection
He passed away in Montreal in 1984, leaving behind a body of work that reflects a life lived with deep engagement in both the duties of a commander and the observations of an artist.
