      1904 - 1993

      Early Life, Family and Training

Warren Hunter was born in London, Texas, in 1904. His early years involved a period of transition when his family lived in Chicago for four years. During this time, the city's influence began to shape his developing eye. He spent significant time at the Art Institute and the Field Museum of Natural History, watching the works and collections housed within those walls.

His formal training took place in Chicago, where he focused on the technical requirements of commercial art. He studied under Allen Philbrick and E. A. Forsberg, learning the discipline required for professional illustration and design. While he spent weekends working in the cloakroom of the Art Institute, his focus remained on the craft being taught within its walls. This period of study culminated in 1939, when he graduated with honors from the Chicago Art Institute.

      Patrons, Workshop and Commissions

Hunter’s hands were often occupied by the specific demands of others. In one instance, Dr. C. H. Langford commissioned a portrait of Jeff Hamilton, a man who had served Sam Houston. This work eventually found its place in the San Jacinto Monument Museum. Such private requests sat alongside more public responsibilities. In 1938, while still a student, Hunter secured a commission from the U.S. Treasury Department. He was tasked with painting a mural for the new post office in Alice, Texas. He painted the large canvas in Chicago before transporting it to Texas, where it hung in the post office lobby until 1969.

The years of the war brought a shift in his daily labor. During World War II, he worked for the U.S. Army Map Service. This period of service was followed by a career as a commercial artist in San Antonio. His work moved between the precision required for maps and the practical needs of commercial design. He also spent time illustrating books, earning recognition for his work on "The Esther Thomas Hoblitzelle Collection of English Silver" in 1957 and "Two Silly Kings" in 1964.

      Key Works and Artistic Achievements

In 1939, Hunter completed a significant mural titled South Texas Panorama for the Alice, Texas Post Office. The oil on canvas work, which measures 581¼ by 1413⁄4 inches, captures a scene of local life, including figures engaged in farming, harvesting, and smithing. This commission was part of a larger effort by the U.S. Treasury Department to bring art into public spaces. The mural was eventually moved to the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection in 1968.

His hand also appeared in the world of book design and illustration. In 1957, he received the Chicago Book Clinic Award for his work on The Esther Thomas Hoblitzelle Collection of English Silver. A few years later, in 1964, he was recognized with the Southern Book Publishers’ Award for his contributions to Two Silly Kings. These projects showed a precision that extended beyond the large scale of his murals into the detailed requirements of printed media.

Later in his career, his professional standing was marked by a 1972 Distinguished Service Award from the American Artists Professional League. His output remained varied, moving between the heavy textures of oil on canvas and the lighter, more fluid application of watercolors. His sketches and paintings often focused on the specificities of the Texas landscape and its people.

      Teaching and Professional Roles

Hunter’s influence extended well beyond the canvas and into the structured environments of art education. He held a central position in the development of formal art training in San Antonio, serving as the inaugural dean of the San Antonio Art Institute. His commitment to the craft led him to establish the Hunter School of Art, creating a space dedicated to the technical and creative development of others. These roles allowed him to shape the local landscape of artistic practice through direct mentorship and institutional leadership.

In the classroom, he focused on the fundamentals of form and anatomy. He taught life drawing at the Witte Memorial Museum School of Art, guiding students through the essential study of the human figure. His approach was marked by a dedication to his students, offering a steady presence for those learning to translate physical reality into visual language. This period of his life was defined by a quiet, persistent focus on nurturing the next generation of artists through disciplined observation and technical instruction.

Where to See the Works Today

His presence in public collections remains anchored by the large-scale mural, South Texas Panorama, which resides within the Smithsonian American Art Museum. This work, originally created for the Alice, Texas Post Office, carries the weight of its history through its sheer scale. Nearby, the San Jacinto Monument Museum holds the portrait of Jeff Hamilton, a piece that captures a specific figure from the past.

Smaller, more intimate studies can be found in various settings. The watercolor titled Mexican Family, measuring 14 1/2 x 21 in., offers a closer look at his handling of the medium. Similarly, the 1960 watercolor Cyprus Solitude Caddo Lake provides a glimpse into his later observations of the landscape. These works allow for a quiet study of his technique away from the larger commissions.
